RelayRides is a car rental marketplace where travelers can rent any car they want from a vibrant community of local car owners.
To rent a car a user enters travel dates and a location and selects from a vast collection of unique, locally-owned cars. The user sends a request to rent the car and the owner has the option to confirm or decline the trip.
To list a car a user gives a description, uploads some photos, and enters dates so travelers know when their car is available.
I worked closely with the CEO, product team, and engineering to define design strategy. I delivered final designs for all key flows on the website including home page, search, product page, checkout, listing flow, dashboard, and profile.
In addition I designed the company's first mobile app with a focus on enabling faster communication between owners and renters.
Analyzed competitor feature set - Get Around, City Car Share, and Zip car for best practices of peer-to-peer car rental experiences in reserving cars, hand off between the owner and renter and payments.
Also reviewed e-commerce apps for best practices in listing and transaction flow experiences.
I worked with an aggressive timeline (less than three months) and collaborated with product managers and engineers to deliver final designs to meet an important company announcement which was the OnStar integration with GM.
In order to move rapidly, I first developed and sketched design solutions on a white board with the CEO and product managers and then created wireframes for the engineers.
To shorten the design cycle I conducted quick internal user tests on paper prototypes.
I iterated rapidly on the Home page due to the fact that the brand and value proposition had to be communicated clearly and stand out from the competition.
The listing flow was especially challenging due to the complexity of the logistics of completing a car rental transaction. The listing process initially only consisted of a very basic web form so I had to design the entire listing flow.
I worked on a number of variations designed to keep the flow simple while giving users the functionality needed to decide on duration of reservation and pricing.
I designed the mobile app from the ground-up. My designs prioritized a sub-set of features that would immediately benefit the user - search, product view, request car reservation, checkout, and dashboard.
The launch was successful and the new designs were well received.
